The Environmental Working Group (EWG) performed more than 43,000 tests for pesticides on various types of produce in thousands of samplings. Their computer analysis revealed that consumers could reduce their exposure to pesticides by almost 90 percent by avoiding just the most contaminated fruits and vegetables. They came up with a list of the most pesticide-laden produce varieties.

My son Scott loves potato chips. Since potatoes are in the “dirty dozen”, I try very hard to just get organic potato chips. But, organic potato chips are SO EXPENSIVE. It doesn’t seem worthwhile to even buy that little tiny bag. Recently, Scott brought me a potato and said, “Can you make me some potato chips?” I love the fact that he deduced that potato chips come from potatoes, and that he was confident I could produce them. Which I did. They were amazing. Kaylee came home from softball practice and ate the leftovers, then asked if I would make them for her the next morning for her lunch. I will never purchase bagged potato chips again.
Pin ItIt is so simple to make your own sandwich meat, and it tastes SO much better than anything you can purchase prepackaged or have sliced at a supermarket deli.
Pin ItI LOVE my rotisserie oven. I don’t know why food tastes so much better coming out of the rotisserie than the oven, but it does. I prefer to cook meat in it if I can. This turkey breast was amazing – I used it to make lunch meat and the flavor even in thinly sliced pieces was just wonderful.
Pin ItHere’s the menu for my family for the week of April 18th. As far as desserts go, last week I thought I was cooking for Kaylee’s softball team, but that is this week. So, I’ll be making Delectable Deluxe Brownies Tuesday. We’re observing a Passover Seder on Wednesday, and I’m going to attempt a flour-free lemon cheesecake. The children will be making Resurrection Cookies Saturday night.
Pin ItI think school lunches have been on the radar for at least the last year – with Jamie Oliver’s Food Revolution airing last April. I know a lot of those in the “real food world” have been speaking out about them for years, but to little to no avail. But Jamie Oliver got the mainstream America talking, at least for a little while. School lunch news this week has been all freshly abuzz with the premiere of Food Revolution 2, an article in the Washington Post about flavored milk, and an article in the Chicago Tribune about a school that didn’t allow any child without a medical permission slip to eat anything but the lunches provided by the school.
My puppy, Cybil, is obsessed with our food. She snatches it out of kids’ hands, off of the counter, off of the table – it’s a constant fight to keep her down and away from food. I thought that maybe making her dog food out of our leftovers would break her obsession. It did work some, but not entirely, but there has been an improvement. Nevertheless, I’ve made the homemade dog food part of our daily routine. Both of the dogs clean their bowls every time. I had at one time thought to replace the dry dog food I buy entirely; however, I really just supplement with the homemade.
Pin ItHere’s the menu for my family for the week of March 28th. As far as desserts go, we are traveling this weekend, so I’m going to make some cookies for the trip.
Pin ItHere’s the menu for my family for the week of March 21st. Last week, I told you that our church is taking part in a call to 40 days of fasting and prayer. I told you that I’d decided to do a Daniel Fast throughout the 40-days, but I changed my mind. I absolutely did not feel led to begin a Daniel Fast. Instead, I will be participating in the fasting in a different way. I will update you as that happens.
Kaylee’s softball season begins today. She has a game every single night this week, and every night most weeks until the season ends. Our meals are going to be portable for the away games, allowing the boys to eat on our way to the games.
Pin ItThis is my go-to recipe for waffles in the hotel-style waffle maker. They have an amazing flavor and pack a nutritious punch that would be hard pressed to be beaten. I love serving them with real butter and real maple syrup.
