Gregg and I watched Food, Inc., last week. The facts presented were interesting, but it was just ridiculous how they twisted things with the intent of eliciting an emotional response. The facts as facts were enough to get the point across without the added exaggeration element. But, I guess that’s how “documentaries” are presented.

Here’s the menu for my family for the week of August 24th. As far as desserts go, my cake plate is empty. I think we need a cake. I have a coconut and saw a fresh coconut cake recipe. If I can find that recipe (I read it in a doctor’s office several weeks ago) I think I’ll give it a go. Kaylee’s favorite is coconut. We have a cookie jar about half filled with Oatmeal Raisin Cinnamon Chip Cookies that Gregg and I made with homemade cinnamon chips (we didn’t like the ingredients in the Hershey’s brand.) I’ll be posting that recipe and process, and likely will make him another batch to mail to him with a box that has to go out next week. Kaylee has also requested chocolate chunk cookies (recipe to follow) for her lunches next week.
Pin ItA roux is a thickening agent made from some kind of fat with an equal portion of flour. You melt the fat, add the flour, then cook until the flour taste is removed.
Pin ItPeaches just taste like summertime to me. I love biting into a sun-warmed peach and having the burst of juice and sweet flesh fill my mouth. I had a big basket of peaches recently and wanted to capture some of that summer sunshine for dessert that night. So I made a fresh peach pie as if it were an apple pie. It was amazing.
Pin ItHere’s the menu for my family for the week of August 16th. This is Gregg’s last week home and Kaylee’s first full week of school. As far as desserts go, I’m making Household6Diva’s Rosetta Apple Pie and a batch or 2 of cookies.
Pin ItIn order for these thousands of walkers to make it from opening ceremonies through three days of walking to closing ceremonies, they need a little help. That’s where the volunteer crew comes in. Hallee and I met as part of that crew, which means we were up at 3:30 in the morning and working throughout the day and in some cases into the night doing a large assortment of odd jobs. It’s a rough gig, but I’m always honored to join in.
Pin ItMy friend Shannon is doing a fundraiser for Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation. She graciously agreed to do a guest post on my blog that included this recipe. It is a delicious, garden fresh recipe that includes pasta from Fun Pasta.
Pin ItWe are still out of town, still in a hotel with a 2-burner stove, a microwave, 1 large pot, and 1 large frying pan. We do have access to a grill, so we’ve been trying to use that to cook the meat as much as possible. Breakfasts are provided by the hotel.
Here’s the menu for my family for the week of August 9th. As far as desserts go, we have store-bought ice cream and Fresh Bakery bakery pound cake.
