Every year, I make Valentine’s cookies for gifts for my kids’ teachers (except Kaylee — apparently when you’re in high school, it’s not “cool” to give your teachers cookies – heh). One of the cookies going into the basket this this year, is a a double-decker cookie.

One of the reasons I love Valentine’s Day is because there are so many different from-the-kitchen crafty ideas – easy, inexpensive, fun ways to show someone you love them. You can keep it as simple as some construction paper and paper doilies, or go as extreme as cookie flower bouquets.
Pin ItAs I write this, it’s December 6th and we have just under three weeks to prepare for our Christmas baking gift giving. This is a tradition my mother taught me, and something I look forward to and plan for every single year.
Pin ItRecently, Gregg suggested a picnic for our date night. I posed the question on my personal Facebook wall and on Hallee the Homemaker’s Facebook as to what would be a good dessert for a night time picnic. A friend on my personal wall immediately came back with “Whoopie Pies.” It was intended to be a clever joke, but I thought it was brilliant. Only, whoopie pies are traditionally chocolate, and Gregg isn’t a huge chocolate fan. So, I thought, “I bet someone has made a red velvet whoopie pie.” A quick search took me to Liz at Hoosier Homemade – a long time resident of my blog roll and the site to which I often turn for cupcake ideas. This recipe was EASY. I adjusted it slightly. The cookies I made were big – this recipe gave me 6 whoopie pies. However, if I were going to make it again (and I will – maybe even today!) – I would cut the size in half to come up with 12 pies. I was working fast to get these in the oven so that they could cool in time to make for our date, so I did not take any pictures of the process.
Pin ItHere’s the menu for my family for the week of September 12th. As far as desserts go, my cookie jar is empty and must be filled! I’ll be making some Traditional Sugar Cookies and decorating them with the boys this week for art for school.
Pin ItHere’s the menu for my family for the week of July 18th. This is Gregg’s last week home. As far as desserts go, I’m going to re-attempt the red velvet cheesecake. I’m also going to make some Whole Wheat Dark Chocolate Chip Cookies.
Pin ItThese were SOOOO yummy. And, such a nice break from a zucchini bread kind of sweet with squash. Gregg said that it was too sweet, but I gave him a large piece. When I cut the piece sizes to about the size of fudge, they were the perfect size.
Pin ItHere’s the menu for my family for the week of July 4th. As far as desserts go, we’re going to make some Traditional Sugar Cookies cut out in star shapes for the Independence Day holiday. I’m also going to try some desserts that incorporate squash — because I have a plethora of squash and want to do something other than saute it. We’re leaving for Glen Eden Youth Center on Friday, so I’ll be making some granola bars and cookies to take with us for snacking there.
Pin ItHere’s the menu for my family for the week of June 27th. Gregg is home (yay!) and Tuesday this week is our 9th wedding anniversary. As such, I’m going to attempt to create a red velvet cheesecake my friend Heather from Out of the Box Into the Kitchen recommended to me. The recipe she gave me called for a Devil’s Food cake mix, so I’m going to try to recreate the recipe real food style. I also found a cookie cutter in the shape of Lightning McQueen, and may make some Traditional Sugar Cookies and let my boys decorate some cookies. We also have a ton of birthday cake left.
Pin ItHere’s the menu for my family for the week of June 20th. Gregg comes home Thursday night!! My sister-in-law will also be in town Thursday night and my parents on Friday because we’re having a big combination birthday party for Scott and Johnathan on Saturday. As far as desserts go, I’ll be filling the cookie jar with something fun so that there’s cookies available for all of our company. I’ll also be making a large sheet cake for the boys’ party, and some homemade ice cream for the party.
