We Can Bake It! Yes We Can!

operation-baking-gals-logoOperation Baking GALS (Give a Little Support) was started in 2008 by Susan Whetzel. Her cousin was deployed to Iraq and she rallied some blog friends to send baked goods to the troops stationed in the Middle East. She got an overwhelming response!

The Operation Baking GALS website allows you to search through the list of men and women deployed in service to our country who would love to receive home baked goods. Make a selection and start baking! The bakers ship out baked good about once a month.

Here is their goal as listed on their website: once a month we strive to send out some home-baked goodness to the men and women currently deployed in a war zone, sacrificing so much for us. We all ship our goods at the same time (within a week) so that the individual feels bombarded with love and appreciation and shares with the others around them.

With the Thanksgiving and Christmas season fast approaching, I will be posting several baked goods recipes that would be good to ship. If you have a good recipe, blog about it and link back to here or email it to me (hallee@halleethehomemaker.com) and I will be happy to post it for you!

Remember that anything you ship will be in transit for a few weeks, so it will need to be properly packaged so that it will stay fresh. I use a Seal-A-Meal when shipping goods to my husband, but we have in the past been successful with a combination of plastic bags and throw-away Gladware or similar products.

The GALS site also accepts paypal donations for those of you who are less inclined to go with home baked from your oven.

This would be a WONDERFUL family project – a way to give back to those who have — and are — sacrificing so much and a way to open up the door to talk about things happening in our world and our wonderful military with your children.
