Homemade Taco Seasoning Spice Blend
Homemade Taco Seasoning Mix
I’m not a fan of the packaged seasoning mixes only because they contain ingredients other than the spices. I haven’t been using them now for about two years and haven’t missed using them yet.
2 tsp to 1 TBS chili powder (to taste) 2 tsp onion powder 1 tsp ground cumin 1 tsp garlic powder (not garlic salt) 1 tsp paprika 1 tsp ground oregano 1 tsp sugar 1/2 tsp Kosher or sea salt (optional)
measuring spoons
small bowl
Mix all ingredients.
This recipe yields about 3 to 3 1/3 TBS or 1.5 to 1.6 ounces of seasoning
A single store bought packet of seasoning is about 2 1/2 TBS at 1.25 ounces

Just 1 tsp cumin – I started to say, “1 tsp each of these…” as the original recipe said but decided to list them separately.
The oregano is fine ground instead of powdered — I just changed it to ‘dried’.
Thanks for sharing! I’ve been looking for a new homemade version – the one I tried from a cookbook was awful! Can you clarify 2 things for me, please:
1 tsp each ground cumin – is there another ingredient (ie; “each”)
1 tsp powdered oregano – I’m assuming you don’t mean “ground” because your pix looks like the dried oregano leaves
Thanks so much!!
great! sounds yummy!!! have you tried the spice Grand Marsal (I think that is how it is spelled) it give a sweet-ish flavor. Most people use it in Indian cooking, but here in NM we put it in our chili and beans :0 so good!
Glad you shared this … this is a great way for us to cut back as taco meat is a staple in our home!
I tried this tonight, Hallee and it was wonderful. I add a 1/2 teaspoon of cayenne pepper to make it a little hot, it was just right. So much better than having to use the packaged stuff!!
I took out the sugar and added 1 tsp of salt instead of 1/2. That was on accident. I also mixed the seasonings in 3/4 cup water, like the seasoning packets tell you to do. Tasted great!
Used this last night when we had tacos. No more little seasoning packets for us!!! Awesome recipe! Tim was a bit skeptical at first but he gave it kudos when we ate!
Hey Hallee;
