So, last Monday, half of my tree fell. The ground was just saturated with rain and there must be something attacking it, because half of it just fell over. Right onto a friend’s car. Some of the apples were close to being ready. Some were moderately ready. And some were good pectin making apples.
It’s apple season here at our household, and our apple tree is bursting with fruit. While planning to take a meal to a family at church who just had a baby, I decided to make an apple pie. But, when I inventoried my aluminum pans, I discovered that I’m out of pie plates. Since I try not to take anything that needs to be returned to me (so that the family doesn’t have to keep up with dishes from so many church members bringing food) I decided instead to use a square cake pan and make an apple crisp. When I get to working fast in the kitchen, I forget that often I should be taking pictures for posts for recipes. This is one of those occasions. I had a lot going on in my kitchen the day that I made this catsup, and I was finishing it up when I realized I should have been documenting the process. Consequently, I apologize, but I will tell you that this is an incredibly flavorful condiment. I will forever use it for our homemade catsup (or ketchup, as my spell check prefers!)Pin It
I know I didn’t post a garden post last week. To be honest, the garden frustrated me a little bit last week, and I just had to take a step back from it. We’d had so much rain – record breaking rainfall. Then the temperature dropped. Then it warmed up and we had even more rain.
Pectin is found in under ripe food and is a substance that will jell fruit juice when combined with sweeteners. I’m not all that crazy about growing my own fruit, being careful about the source of the food I buy, carefully preparing to preserve such fruit — then having to preserve it with a box of some Sure-Jel that came off of the Wal-Mart shelf. So, I researched into how to make my own pectin.Pin It
