My Girl

Posted by Hallee on Nov 10, 2010 in Hallee's Galley, Parenting, Preserving, Raising girls, Raising teens

Kaylee brought a friend home from school the other day. They came into the kitchen, where I was working, barefoot, in my long apron that covered my long skirt. She gestured at the row of mason jars I had cooling on the towel-covered counter and said, “What’s in the jars?”

Seeds of Faith: The Friendship Factor

Posted by Hallee on Nov 6, 2010 in Christian Faith, converstations, Parenting, Raising girls, Raising teens

Most of us go into parenting completely oblivious to what is ahead. We think that we will be the best parents on the planet – the ones who always know where their children are and who they’re with. We look at child abductions and crimes against children, drug and alcohol abuse by children, pregnant teens, eating disorders, and think, “Not MY child.”

Our Sound Bite Culture

There’s a woman I know who is young – maybe 21-years-old or even younger. She has three children by three men and has never been married. She lives with her mother. Her current boyfriend does not live with her, but he does spend the night often. She gambles regularly. And, she is deeply spiritual. You won’t find someone who talks about Jesus Christ more than her.

Seeds of Faith: Girlhood Interrupted

Posted by Hallee on Oct 16, 2010 in Christian Faith, converstations, Parenting, Raising girls, Raising teens

We exist in a culture that seems to set out to make our children into adults earlier and earlier in their life. They are bombarded with messages and images that cry out to them to leave childhood behind and make adult decisions, to dress like adults, to act like adults.

Seeds of Faith: Redefining Beauty

Posted by Hallee on Oct 2, 2010 in Christian Faith, converstations, Parenting, Raising girls, Raising teens

My husband and I went through a spiritual revival about 18 months ago. Part of that revival was cleaning out what we take in. I don’t mean food. I mean all of our sensory input: television, movies, games, music, internet, radio, etc. We stopped consuming sin, in a way to quit condoning so much sin in our culture.

Modesty

Posted by Hallee on Oct 1, 2010 in Christian Faith, Parenting, Raising girls, Raising teens

God is so good and is such a provider – even when all I need provided is a diving board. I was excited to write a post on modesty, but honestly once Saidah gave me the deadline to get the post to her, I have been at a loss as to what to say. Then, [...]

The Concession Stand

Posted by Hallee on Sep 9, 2010 in Life, Parenting, Raising girls, Raising teens

At the BINGO hall is a concession stand that sells the typical fare – mostly soy hamburgers on white bread, pork hotdogs, chips with nacho cheese, frozen “pizza logs” reheated in a microwave, etc. Consequently, when I get home from the soup kitchen, I usually make a big dinner and take it to feed to the volunteers.

‘Cause They’re Whose Clues? Blue’s Clues!

She babysat for me a few weeks ago on a day she just didn’t feel like babysitting. I had to go to an office supply store while I was out, and I saw this pad of sticky notes. Kaylee’s favorite color is orange. I couldn’t help but buy them. The next morning, this was on my bedroom mirror.

A Public Service Announcement

Posted by Hallee on Jun 2, 2010 in Life, Parenting, Raising girls, Raising teens

Now that more and more households are dropping a “land line” or “house phone” from their budgets and handing all of the people, including the children, in their family a cell phone, it occurred to me the other day that an entire generation of kids are coming up with absolutely no telephone skills to speak of.
