Wonderful Chewy Kiss-Filled Brownies

Wonderful Chewy Kiss-Filled Brownies

These were amazing.  I’ve made them twice since discovering the recipe, and they were just as good both times.  I got the recipe from the back of the Hersheys Mini Kisses package, and changed it to whole wheat flour and bumped up the salt some.  I took them to a church potluck, and a friend tasted them and requested them for the upcoming youth convention trip.  They were a huge hit.

INGREDIENTS:

⅔ cup unsweetened cocoa powder
½ tsp baking soda
⅔ cup butter, divided
½ cup boiling water
2 cups sugar
2 eggs
1 tsp vanilla extract
1½ cups whole wheat flour
1 tsp salt
1¾ cups large chocolate chunks (like Nestlee Baking Chunks or Hersheys Mini Kisses)
⅔ cup chopped nuts (I used pecans)

SUPPLIES:

large bowl
mixer
measuring cups/spoons
method by which you melt butter (saucepan or glass measuring cup for microwave)
spatula
13×9 baking dish

PREPARATION:

Grease 13x9x2 baking pan.

Melt butter.

Chop nuts.

Preheat oven to 350° degrees F.

DIRECTIONS:

Mix cocoa and baking soda.

Stir in ⅓ melted butter and the boiling water.

Stir well.

Stir in sugar, eggs, and remaining ⅓ cup butter.

Stir in vanilla.

Add flour and salt.

Mix well.

Stir in chocolates and nuts.

Spread into prepared pan.

Bake 35 to 40 minutes or until edges begin to pull away from the sides of the pan.

Cool completely on a wire rack.  Cut into bars.

YIELD:

36 brownies

NOTES:

Don’t cut into these warm.  The chocolate inside of them will still be melted, and they will have no integrity (voice of experience here.)

I would love to hear any feedback about this recipe. Did you make it? Did you enjoy it? Did you make any adjustments to it?
