The Power of a Praying Wife: Chapter 11 – His Health

Heal me, O LORD, and I shall be healed; Save me, and I shall be saved, For You are my praise. Jeremiah 17:14

During an airborne operation, my husband, Gregg, discovered that he was allergic to fire ants.  He parachuted out of a plane and landed on a fire ant bed.  He was bitten several times, resulting in his body producing massive amounts of histamines that started to send him into anaphylaxis.  After taking a dose of Benadryl, we both still thought maybe he should go to the emergency room, just in case.

The doctors there decided to do a chest x-ray, for whatever reason.  On the film, they saw spots on Gregg’s lungs.

Gregg’s mother died from cancer before her 35th birthday.  His father’s mother died from cancer.  His mother’s sister has had a double masectomy.  His father, not a drinker, has had a kidney transplant and a liver transplant.  Gregg himself is a survivor of Gulf War Syndrome.  And here he was, at the age of 37, with spots on his lungs.

That was the day we decided to quit smoking and to change the way we eat.

In the back of my mind, as I pray for my husband’s health, I think of his family history.  That big terrifying C word looms there in so many close relatives, something that my family has not had to face.  So I pray that his body remains healthy, that the cells in his body do what they’re supposed to do and act the way they’re supposed to act.  I pray that his generation be spared from and that his mother’s generation was the beginning of the end of that disease to this family.  I pray that we live long lives on earth, together, serving God.

The next time he had a chest xray, there were no spots.  All I can do is continue to pray and continue to praise God for His healing power.  To thank Him for the healthy bounty that we are able to prepare and enjoy, and for the education we have received about food, health, and the healing power of food.

Read Chapter 11 of The Power of a Praying Wife and consider the following discussion questions.   Comments are turned off on this post, and the discussion has been created in Hallee’s Daily Brew by following this link:

1.  Does your husband have good or bad habits when it comes to taking care of his health?  Does he have good intentions but poor follow-through, good intentions and good follow through, or does have have no intentions at all when it comes to taking care of his health?

2.  Does your husband have particular habits that bother you because they undermine his health?

3.  Are there things you’ve tried to get your husband to do for his health and he just won’t do them?  What are they?  How does that make you feel when he won’t take your suggestions t o heart?  What do you think he should be doing for his health?

4.  Proverbs 16:24 says, “Pleasant words are like a honeycomb, Sweetness to the soul and health to the bones.”  In light of this Scripture, how can you contribute to your husband’s health?

5.  2 Kings 20:5 says, ““Return and tell Hezekiah the leader of My people, ‘Thus says the LORD, the God of David your father: “I have heard your prayer, I have seen your tears; surely I will heal you. On the third day you shall go up to the house of the LORD.”  Do you trust that God is a God of healing?  That He cares about our health?

6.  Read the prayer out loud on pages 105-106 of The Power of a Praying Wife.  Include specifics about your husband’s health habits.
