Every year, I make Valentine’s cookies for gifts for my kids’ teachers (except Kaylee — apparently when you’re in high school, it’s not “cool” to give your teachers cookies – heh). One of the cookies going into the basket this this year, is a a double-decker cookie.

I use my cast iron skillet to cook with as often as possible. It is wonderful, distributes heat beautifully, and cooks evenly. But, you have to treat it differently when it’s time to wash it.
Here are the things you don’t do with cast iron:
don’t wash with soap
don’t use steel wool or any other kind of really abbrassive material
don’t put it in the dishwasher
don’t let it air dry
I wash mine with Kosher salt.

While the cost of everything seems to be going up, rapidly, I can tell you that my husband’s pay hasn’t gone up in the last year. NOT that I’m complaining. I’m SO thankful has has a job, locally, and isn’t having to work 8,000 miles away anymore. But, health insurance costs doubled (why is everyone so surprised that happened?), and his paycheck doesn’t stretch like it used to.
So, what are we doing to adjust to the higher costs of goods but the same pay? Here are just a few ideas:

Monosodium Glutamate (MSG) is baaaaaaaaaaaaaad. Bad, bad, bad, bad. Don’t consume it. Read labels and make sure that nothing you feed your family contains MSG. Among other horrible things (along with damaging the retinas in eyes, causing obesity, messing with the reproductive system) is that it’s a neurotoxin. That means that it’s poison for the brain.

In a follow-up to my Facebook Sucks post, I decided to make a move.
A new feature on Google+ is communities. As soon as it started, I became a member of a number of writers’ communities. I did a search recently for “homemaking” within the communities and only found 5 — three of which were private groups. So, I thought, why not start one? Obviously, there’s a hole there.
So I created a community on Google+. I would LOVE for this to become more than just a place for me to share – my vision is for it to become a regular hangout for homemakers, homemaking bloggers, wives, moms, and just friends in general.
