During this busy weekend, did you see VFW (Veterans of Foreign Wars) members at intersections giving away red “Buddy Poppies” for donations? Did you get one? Did you wear it?
The VFW veterans are not an unaccustomed sight during the Memorial Day weekend, but do you know what the poppies mean? Do you know the story for the poppy being a symbol of remembrance for our war dead?
Gregg will be back with a creation post next week, but he emailed me this picture and asked me to wish you a Happy Memorial ….
We are about to go into Chapter 4 of this book. I’ve been sick this week, and haven’t had a chance to get the post together for it. Kaylee came home Friday (yesterday) afternoon, and this morning (Saturday) early we will be leaving to go work at our family’s church camp to get it ready for camp in July. So, rather than cram a post together in an important chapter, I thought I’d come to you with some concerns.

My friend Natalee is a veterinarian living in Washington state with her husband and 2 awesome kids. Imported from Canada some years ago, she does things with cupcakes you just cannot believe.You can find her other amazing contributions to the blog here. I wrote her a couple of weeks ago and asked if she could do a cupcake for Memorial Day. I cannot tell you how thrilled I was when she decided to do something with Forget-Me-Nots. These flowers are traditional memorials for Canada’s Newfoundland’s war dead instead of the Flanders Poppies that are popular in America. These cupcakes are beautiful. She named them “Red, White, and Blueberry Cupcakes with Forget-Me-Nots.”

I accomplish these tasks before I even pour my first cup of coffee in the morning. These three chores will take less than 10 minutes out of your entire morning, but they will make a world of difference in how your home feels, and will help set the tone for the entire day.

It’s all starting to happen this week. Lots of progress has been made, but there’s still work to do every day. Here’s the view of the big garden – the shadow of the house is annoying. Sorry about that. I didn’t take the picture until Wednesday morning, when I have been taking them Tuesday evening:
When Stephanie Langford of Keeper of the Home emailed me and asked me to review her new book, Real Food on a Real Budget How to Eat Healthy for Less, I’ll admit that I was a little apprehensive. As a writer affiliated with writerly things, I’ve never been a big fan of self-published works. There’s often something to be said for a professional editing job.
I don’t know what time Johnathan was born. Before 9AM, I think. He was 6lbs, 7oz, and 19 inches long. Those extra 6 weeks he got beefed him up compared to his brother’s 3-pounder birth. Like with Scott, I was too sick to see him after his birth, and he went straight to the NICU. When Gregg brought me pictures, I joked that his nickname didn’t need to be Jeb, it needed to be Biff, because he looked like a little football player.
A friend’s 8-year-old daughter asked for a “Jacob” cake. For Kaylee, I could have gone all abstract with bloodly feathers, apples, and stacks of books. For a bunch of second graders, I had to be a little more inventive. So, here’s what I came up with:
