The Power of a Praying Wife: Chapter 27 – His Obedience

Therefore whoever hears these sayings of Mine, and does them, I will liken him to a wise man who built his house on the rock:  and the rain descended, the floods came, and the winds blew and beat on that house; and it did not fall, for it was founded on the rock. But everyone who hears these sayings of Mine, and does not do them, will be like a foolish man who built his house on the sand:  and the rain descended, the floods came, and the winds blew and beat on that house; and it fell. And great was its fall.  ~Matthew 7:24-27

Several months ago, Gregg was faced with a tough decision.  He had fulfilled two contracts in Afghanistan, had been gone for eighteen months, and needed to decide if he was going to stay there or come home.  He fasted and prayed and sought what the right decision would be.  Then he called me.

“I’m going to extend and sign another contract for seven months.”

It was very hard for me to hear.  The original plan was one year.  Then seven more months.  Now we were looking at seven more months.  I didn’ t like it and fought a knee-jerk response to moan and wail and instead said, “I realize how hard this decision was for you.  But, I also trust that the decision was prayerfully made and that you’re listening to God.  So, whatever His plan is, I’m on board.”

When you can trust your husband’s obedience to the Holy Spirit’s prompting in his life, then you can trust that where he leads, you’re to follow.  My husband is a praying, faithful man and desires to live in obedience to God.  Knowing that about him makes me trust him and his decisions all the more.  He purposefully strives to stay obedient to God’s word and to listening to God’s voice.  It makes decisions that should be agonizing — do I work seven more months away from my family or become unemployed and come home? — easy to make, because he knows that he’s following God’s leading in his life.

Read Chapter 27 of The Power of a Praying Wife and consider the following discussion questions.  They are also posted on the forum at Hallee’s Daily Brew here, but the comments are open on this post if you prefer to discuss it here.

1.  Do you feel your husband has a deep and committed relationship with God?  Do you believe that you do?  Write a prayer asking God to help you grow together in the Lord.

2.  Do you consider your husband a man of prayer?  How much does he pray?  Would you like to see him pray more?  Write a prayer about that.

3.  Do you feel that your husband has a heart to obey God and live His way?

4.  One of the best ways to learn how God wants us to live is to read His Word.  Does your husband read the Bible regularly?  Does he get good Bible teaching?

5.  Christ’s words in Matthew 7:24-27 are quoted in the beginning of this post.  In light of this Scripture, how important is it to you and you family that your husband obeys God?

6.  Read the prayer on page 186 of The Power of a Praying Wife. Include specifics as they are related to your husband’s obedience.
