When I was thirteen-years-old, my family moved from Oregon to Florida. To that point in my life, I’d lived in Germany, Washington state, and Oregon. There is a HUGE cultural difference between the Pacific Northwest and the Southeastern United States, and it manifested itself in my first southern classroom.

Poor Jeb was in such pain that they gave him an IV and a shot of Morphine. That eased the pain enough to allow him to play cars with Scott. There’s hardly anything worse than holding down your 2-year-old while two strangers put an IV in him. I know. I’ve had to do it to all three of my kids right around that age.
Ten days ago, I left my home in Kentucky and headed south to Tallahassee, Florida. I got into town Thursday afternoon, visited friends, and went to another friend’s house for the evening. Friday morning I did some business at the courthouse, had lunch with friends, picked Kaylee up from school, had dinner with friends, and went back to a friend’s house for the evening. Saturday morning, we headed south toward the Florida Panhandle’s coast, picking up a friend of Kaylee’s on the way, and took up residence in a little beach house in Mexico Beach.
I’m sitting on a beach in Florida with my kids, enjoying this beautiful April weather.

One weekend before deployment, Gregg had a weekend pass and I was sick. He disappeared into the kitchen and came out with the most amazing sandwich. I’ve been trying to duplicate it ever since.
