A Message to Teenaged Girls Out There

Posted by Hallee on Aug 28, 2013 in Parenting, Raising girls, Raising teens

My initial first thought was, “Doesn’t she have a mother?”

Followed immediately by, “She’s been in school for 7 hours, and her butt cheek is still hanging out of her shorts?”

So, clearly, there’s a lack of adult guidance happening with this young woman, and many just like her. So, I’m going to step up and be the adult in your life. Here’s my public service message to you:

Simple Greek “Peasant” Cornbread (Bobota)

Posted by Hallee on Aug 26, 2013 in Breads, Christian Faith, Hallee's Galley, Mediterranean, Recipes

In Greek, the word bobota can mean anything from cornmeal to any bread or polenta-type dish made with cornmeal. In Greek history, during times of hardship, cornmeal recipes were very popular, and bobota is considered by many to be a “peasant” dish. This recipe gets a delightful shot of flavor from fresh orange juice and produces a dense, crumbly cornbread.

“Training Wheels” for Chopsticks

Posted by Hallee on Aug 16, 2013 in Parenting

While I was in Las Vegas at the Romance Novel Convention, I had the pleasure of having dinner with the beautiful author Suzan Tisdale. We ate at a hibachi grill in the hotel where the convention was held. She had never used chopsticks before and I told her how I “trained” my kids to use them and promised her I would write a blog post about it.

This week, our family had the opportunity to go out with friends to — another hibachi grill! So, I was able to take advantage of my phone camera so I could show you what to do.

You need a small rubber band. Most restaurants with chopsticks are going to have rubber bands for this purpose, but we usually bring our own.

Preview of the upcoming Virtues and Valor series

Posted by Hallee on Aug 13, 2013 in Writing

Here is the prologue from the Virtues and Valor Series, Book 1, Temperance’s Trial, due out in September. This will be a serialized set of seven novellas that take place during WWII. Each book will follow a different female heroine throughout the planning and execution of a mission in occupied France. Every character will be based on a real life heroine from that war. In the back of each novella, I will tell you about the heroine who inspired that book’s character.

Temperance’s Trial follows Marie Gilbert, codenamed Temperance.

The Best Bread & Butter Pickles – Ever

Posted by Hallee on Aug 1, 2013 in Hallee's Galley, Preserving, Snacks

Bread and butter pickles are an absolute favorite of mine. They’re kind of a savory/sweet combination that only a pickle can achieve. This recipe is straight from the Ball Book of Home Preserving. I consider Ball the the foremost expert on all things preserving and will almost always refer to them to answer any questions pertaining to preserving.
