The Power of a Praying Wife: Chapter 29 – His Faith

So Jesus said to them, “Because of your unbelief;for assuredly, I say to you, if you have faith as a mustard seed, you will say to this mountain, ‘Move from here to there,’ and it will move; and nothing will be impossible for you. Matthew 17:20

Faith is the foundation of everything we believe. If we don’t have faith, how can we claim a relationship with God? For everything else we have discussed in this book, faith, to me, is the most important.

Author William Lane Craig says:

If God does not exist, then life is futile. If the God of the Bible does exist, then life is meaningful. Only the second of these two alternatives enables us to live happily and consistently. Therefore, it seems to me that even if the evidence for these two options were absolutely equal, a rational person ought to choose biblical Christianity. It seems to me positively irrational to prefer death, futility, and destruction to life, meaningfulness, and happiness. As [Blaise] Pascal said, we have nothing to lose and infinity to gain.

If my husband is to be the spiritual leader of his family, then I need him to have unwavering faith – the kind of faith that can move a mountain. I need to know that in times of trial and pain, that his faith will hold us together and keep us adrift.

If my husband has no faith, or a weak or floundering faith, I would pray earnestly every day for God to reveal Himself to my husband and remove any doubts he may have. As James 1:6 says, “But let him ask in faith, with no doubting, for he who doubts is like a wave of the sea driven and tossed by the wind.” I need my husband to be a solid rock, firmly rooted by his faith, unable to be moved by the sea or the wind.

In Ephesians 6:14-16, Paul gave the full armor of God, our defense against the wiles of the devil. He listed faith as the “Shield of Faith with which you will be able to quench all the fiery darts of the wicked one.” If we are to stand up to attacks from Satan and the fiery darts he constantly throws our way, then we need to be able to shield ourselves with our faith – and to lock shields with other believers to create an impenetrable wall of protection.

Even someone who believes in God and has a relationship with Jesus may find his faith faulty. When discussing this chapter with Gregg, he mentioned how he used to have faith in both God and secular human philosophy. It caused him to doubt some of the Bible, to explain away things that were inconsistent with what he learned in school. When he began his journey into studying creationism and began to learn just how wrong he had been before, when he started fully relying on the Word of God to be infallible, then his faith grew exponentially and all doubts he might have had about any part of his belief in God went away. The more he learns now, the deeper his faith still grows.

If your husband has no faith, has lost his faith, finds himself in a crisis of faith, or is plagued by doubts, the best thing you can do is to pray. If you are looking for a good resource, The Case for Faith by Lee Strobel is a fantastic tool.

Read Chapter 29 of The Power of a Praying Wife and consider the following discussion questions. They are also posted on the forum at Hallee’s Daily Brew here, but the comments are open on this post if you prefer to discuss it here.

1. Do you see your husband as a man who walks in faith to a certain degree in his life? In what ways and to what degree?

2. Are you and your husband in agreement about faith in God? About belief in the Bible? Are you in unity about the church where you worship?

3. Is your husband’s faith in God’s love, protection, and ability to answer his prayers unwavering, or does he have times of serious doubt? Why?

4. Do you believe that there is nothing in your life or your husband’s life that can’t be positively affected by having a stronger relationship with God and faith in His Word? Why or why not? What things in particular do you feel would be greatly affected by your husband having a stronger faith in God?

5. Romans 10:17 says, “So then faith comes by hearing, and hearing by the word of God.” If faith comes by the Word of God, what is another way you could pray for your husband to increase in faith?

6. Read the prayer out loud on page 197 in The Power of a Praying Wife. Include specifics about your husband’s faith.
