Ronnie Wilson’s Gift

Seeds of Faith Team MemberI’m taking a break from Vicki Courtney’s 5 Conversations You Must Have with Your Daughter to tell you about this amazing children’s book.

Ronnie Wilson’s Gift was written by Francis Chan, author of Crazy Love and The Forgotten God.  (I could rave and rave about those two books, but I’m going to stick on subject here.)  This is his third children’s book (the other two are Halfway Herbert and The Big Red Tractor).  We love his first two, so when my husband ordered the third, I was excited to sit down to read it with my boys.

Halfway through, I could hardly speak because tears were clogging my throat.  My 2-year-old looked up at me and said, “What’s wrong, Mommy?”

I could only say, “Nothing.  I just love Jesus so much.”

Ronnie Wilson is a little boy who finds out about the gift that Jesus gave to him and to the whole world – the gift of salvation, eternal life, forgiveness of sins. He says, “He did that for us? That’s amazing!”

Since Jesus gave Ronnie such an awesome gift, he wants to give Him one, too. While going through his prized possessions, he discovers he only has $6.47 in his piggy bank. But then he finds his prized baseball glove – signed by a professional baseball player.

Ronnie takes his $6.47 and the glove to the post office and requests help to mail it to heaven. Unwilling to be discouraged by the fact that the mail does not deliver to heaven, he leaves the post office and crosses paths with a homeless man. He uses some of his money to buy him a hotdog, then goes home. He decides he’ll jump on his trampoline high enough to get to heaven. A neighbor boy comes over and asks if he can join him, so they have fun spending the afternoon jumping together.

The next day, Ronnie goes to the carnival to use the last of his money to buy a balloon to tie his glove so that he can release it to fly to heaven. Right before he released it, he hears a little girl cry out because she accidentally let go of her own balloon. Ronnie gives her his balloon.

That night, he prays to Jesus, and tells Him he tried to get his glove to Him. He dreams that night, and Jesus thanks him for his gift. Ronnie is confused, so Jesus explains that feeding the homeless man, spending time with a lonely friend, and giving something of his to a girl who couldn’t afford another balloon were all gifts to Jesus. He then quotes Matthew 25:40:

And the King will answer and say to them, ‘Assuredly, I say to you, inasmuch as you did it to one of the least of these My brethren, you did it to Me.’

When Ronnie wakes up, he takes his glove to another friend, someone who always wanted to play baseball but didn’t have his own glove. That night, Ronnie prays and says, “Dear Jesus, I hope you liked the glove.”

This book was amazing. SUCH a wonderful lesson to teach your children about the joy of giving selflessly to others.

As I write this, I’m again consumed with such love for our Lord. I pray that you get the same blessing from this book.
