With less than a month until my March of Dimes Walk, I am moving my placard to the top of the page.

The two charities that we support are the Susan G. Komen Foundation and the March of Dimes.

The reason for the cancer walk is because my husband’s mother died of breast cancer at the age of 32 when he was barely 8 years old. Many of his close family members have battled with breast cancer as well.

The reason we support the March of Dimes is a bit closer to home. The mission of March of Dimes is to improve the health of babies by preventing birth defects, premature birth, and infant mortality. I got a late start this year, but I am still hoping to raise $1000.00.

Kaylee:

My beautiful daughter, Kaylee, was born just a bit early and with a birth-defect called Horner’s Syndrome.

Scott:

My eldest son, Scott, was born by emergency C-Section at just over 30 weeks. His due-date birthday is the 21st of this month. He weighed a whopping 3 pounds and 5 ounces at birth.

He proceeded to lose and gain back precious ounces while spending the next month of his life in the NICU and PICU.

Gregg was at a military school over 360 miles away. He arrived about a half hour after the emergency delivery.

Did you know that the only type of blood that NICU babies can take is type O-NEGATIVE, and that my husband is O-NEGATIVE? He donates blood every two months when he is in the states. If you are type O-NEG, I strongly encourage you to donate blood. Your single pint could literally save the lives of three infants in the NICU.

Johnathan:

My youngest son, Johnathan, little Jebbie, was also delivered by C-Section at just under 36 weeks and weighed almost twice as much as his big brother.

Johnathan was born with a hole in his left lung. If you look at these photographs carefully, you can see that his chest is depressed on the left side due to what’s called a tension pnuemothorax. Thus, the extra oxygen.

He did very well after spending 10 days in the NICU.

Thanks to a lot of prayer, and a lot of competant and caring nurses and doctors, and an awful lot of research into birth defects, premature births, and still-births funded by the March of Dimes, all of our children have the opportunity to live normal, healthy lives.
