My Plate is Full, But My Cup Overfloweth

It dawned on me about 2PM today that my week is spiraling out of control.

I have a new venture that I haven’t been writing about because I wasn’t certain I was going to be able to commit to it, but I now volunteer two days a week at a local soup kitchen.  They needed a new cook, and I’m happy to do it.  I’m gone out of the house from 6:45 a.m. until about 1:15 p.m.

Johnathan, my 2-year-old , has Hand-Foot-and-Mouth disease.  He has very painful sores all in his mouth and down his throat and hasn’t slept in 2 nights.  Neither have I.  **UPDATE**  Both boys have it now.  Just found the sores in Scott’s mouth, too.

Last night, I got a phone call reminding me about a commitment I made a few months ago.  There is a friend of a friend of a friend who is very poor who is getting married Saturday.  Long ago someone asked me if I would donate a wedding cake to her wedding.  I agreed but never heard back from anyone.  Until last night.  Did I mention that this wedding is Saturday?  And that the wedding cake needs to feed 160?

This weekend is my husband’s family’s big family reunion.  The invitations that went out did not say “pot luck” on them.  Last year, the same mistake was made and no one brought any food.  If it hadn’t been for some local families realizing that no food was coming in quickly throwing something together, there wouldn’t have been much food served at all.  So, when invites were received last week, I got a phone call from Gregg’s great aunt asking me to cook for the reunion, on the heels of Gregg’s cousin’s wife telling me she couldn’t cook again this year.  I readily agreed to cook for the reunion (and am excited to do so.)  The reunion is Sunday.  I’m going up to the camp Saturday evening to start cooking.

Gregg’s sister is coming in town Friday night or Saturday afternoon for the reunion.  She’ll be here for a few days afterward, too.  She’s coming with her four kids and another one of our nieces.  I need to prep my house for company, including the basement where the older nieces and Kaylee will be put on air mattresses.  Until I hung up the phone with her, I didn’t put this weekend as the weekend of the reunion.  I said, “See you in a week or so,” and she responded, “No, just a few days.  It’s this weekend.”

Every single one of these things is a wonderful thing.  But, with them all happening at one time, something has to give this week, and I’m afraid that it’s Hallee the Homemaker.  If I’d remembered about the wedding cake, and realized that THIS weekend was the reunion, I could have lined up some guest bloggers and had better planning for the week.  As it is, I just need to turn my computer off and when I’m not scrubbing floors and taking care of sick boys, I need to be making royal icing flowers so that they’ll be dry by putting the wedding cake together Friday night.

Enjoy this first full week of summer.  I’ll see you Monday morning with a new menu.
