Loving a Life of Biblical Womanhood
The above quote very effectively sums up what I hear most often when addressing the idea of wives respecting their husbands the same way that husbands are to love their wives. I don’t know why we accept the fact that they must unconditionally love us, but a wall goes up when considering an unconditional respect.

We finished the last chapter of Vicki Courtney’s 5 Conversations You Must Have with Your Daughter on July 1st. As much as I enjoyed going through that book with you, I understand that not all of us are mothers of girls, and not all of us are mothers. But, as this is a site for Christian Women, we are mostly women. As such, I’ve decided that the next series in our Writing Worth Reading category should focus simply on womanhood, on being a woman.
My daughter, Kaylee, spent the second semester of seventh grade living with her father in Florida. My boys and I went to spend Spring Break with her. In our beach house, we had cable – something we don’t have at home. Kaylee insisted that I watch a show with her about sweet sixteen birthday parties for young up and coming divas that she’d been watching at his house.
Pin ItNot long ago, my husband, Gregg, and I were just chit chatting about life in general. At some point in the conversation, he said to me, “What are you going to do when both of the boys are in school?”
I kind of paused, then stuttered. “Uhhh, what do you mean?”
He said, “You know. What do you plan to do?”
I have been mentally working on a post on this topic for some time. It’s always kind of been there, in the background, but several months ago, I was blog surfing and came across a blog called Homemaking on a Whim and a post titled, “Is Working Outside the Home a Sin?” The title kind of threw me off guard, and I dug a little deeper into it, finding the reference to another series of articles on a blog called Courageous Homemaking.
Ninety-five percent of women will have sex before they’re married. It doesn’t matter if they’re Christians devoted to purity or not. It means that if you had a church ladies’ group of one hundred women, only five of them were virgins on their wedding nights.
One thing I hear all the time is that people’s lifestyles are so crazy and there isn’t time to spend with God. The thought of just fifteen minutes of devoted prayer time and a five minute “Sound Byte” devotional is overwhelming to many, not to speak of hours of devoted prayer time and hours of devoted Bible study. Yet, the average American adult spends 3-4 hours a day watching television.
Two months into my first marriage, my husband quit his job. I had to withdraw plans to start school three weeks later, and we had to pack up and move back to his hometown. That decision he made started a cycle of unemployment/employment that made our marriage very stressful and very hard. Between the financial problems we faced and the addiction problems he faced during our over nine years of marriage, his adulterous affair and our divorce was a relief for me. I was very much over marriage, had no desire to even date, and never intended to be in a relationship with a man again. Six weeks later, I met Gregg.

My husband Gregg is an incredibly upbeat man. He’ll say he’s very moody; however, that moodiness he feels typically doesn’t manifest until it comes out in his writing and his poetry. His outward attitude is one of confidence and joy. He sings while he works and does chores around the house, he teases and jokes, he laughs, he has fun. He is encouraging and exciting, ready to go on an adventure in a spontaneous moment. Even when I feel myself reacting negatively to something, he’ll crack a joke about it or lighten the mood enough that I’m able to work through the negativity.
Pin ItYesterday, my 13-year-old daughter, Kaylee, and I were at a store buying some essentials to put into a care package for my husband (who is in Afghanistan). While we were there, I stopped by the large magazine rack to see if there were any fitness magazines that he might want or need (he is about to launch a fitness blog). Kaylee asked if she could get a fashion magazine. She is extremely interested in fashion and has even made noises about maybe becoming a fashion designer (the fashion industry could really use a Christian influence – heh.) Before I realized it, she had a copy of Cosmopolitan in her hand. Right on the front cover was: The Sex Quiz You Must Take.
