30 Days of Thankfulness Day 8

I often post a list of all the things for which I’m thankful on Thanksgiving. But, in an effort to get back into the habit of daily blogging, I’ve decided to do a post a day for the month of November

8. God’s Word

As I’ve worked on this list of 30 things for which I’m thankful, I’ve found that I often quote Bible verses to elaborate on the subject.  That’s when it occurred to me that I’m extremely grateful for the gift of God’s word.

All Scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness,  that the man of God may be complete, thoroughly equipped for every good work. 2 Timothy 3:16-17

I believe that the Bible is the inerrant word of God, that He used the Holy Spirit to move men to write the Bible, (2 Peter 1:21) and that it is a living, breathing document that is always relevant. I think that with any situation in my entire life, I can find where the Bible will speak to me.  I believe that the “Old” Testament is just as important as the “New” Testament.  I believe that the Word of God is a weapon against evil (Ephesians 6:17).

I read my Bible daily.  During my daily one-hour walk, I listen to an audio version of the Bible.  Whenever I’m looking for a reference for anything in my daily life, I turn to the Bible first.  I dig in and read it as often as I can.  When I’m sitting in waiting rooms or waiting for one of my children somewhere, I read a little purse Bible I carry with me.  I constantly think on and meditate on the Word of God.

My dad encouraged me when I was 19 to start reading my Bible.  At the time, he was in his mid-forties.  He said, “Don’t wait until you’re as old as I am.  Don’t put it off.  Start studying your Bible now.  I realize now that I will never live long enough to learn as much as I want to learn from the Bible.”

I never get bored with it and I never get tired of it.  I am so very thankful to God for giving us His word.
