Homemade Glass Cleaner

Posted by Hallee on Jan 6, 2012 in Housekeeping |

Yes.  It’s really this simple.  You’d think with all of the products on the market that it would be more complex, but it’s not.

One part white vinegar to one part water.  Put it in a spray bottle and go to town.

I recommend a squeegee for using with this.  I guess the water and vinegar don’t evaporate as quickly as some of the products on the market and just paper towels or a rag will cause it to streak.

You may worry, as I did, about a lingering vinegar smell.  I can assure you that it goes away almost immediately.  There is no smell of vinegar in my house.

  • I use vinegar all over the house…..and we don’t smell like pickles at all. :-)

I made some similar mirror/glass cleaner but mine included equal parts of water, vinegar and rubbing alcohol. (I think the alcohol helps with quick evaporation.) It has been working very nicely! And now even my kids can help keep the bathroom mirrors streak-free. ;-)

I had read that too much vinegar can scratch the glass??? The recipe I’ve seen is like 1/4 cup vinegar to 4 cups of water. Any thoughts on this? I also add 5 drops of lemon essential oil and that helps it smell better!

Also, I read that you can make an “all purpose” cleaner for the shower with vinegar, baking soda, and water but I am wondering if the vinegar and baking soda neutralize each other and make them both ineffective. Any ideas?

I don’t have any experience with it scratching the glass. This recipe came from Martha Stewart’s homemaking book.

I use a less vinegar-y solution for cleaning floors and countertops — about the same concentration you use. To that I add the essential oil, but I don’t bother to with the windows.

Vinegar and baking soda do neutralize each other. When cleaning the bathroom, I use baking soda to scrub and vinegar to disinfect, but not together — I’ll scrub the sink with the baking soda and clean the toilet with water/vinegar/essential lemon oil.

Do you have any good suggestions for a good shower tile cleaner? I have a spray bottle with hydrogen peroxide and water for the grout/mold/mildew but am not sure what to use as a general cleaner…
