You’re not over reacting – I rant about this every year. I can’t find a costume for myself that doesn’t make me look like a slut. I hate it. I can’t imagine if I had a girl how much madder it would make me.

Oh and is there a ‘son’ version of that book? I think little boys need to be taught those kinds of things too.

There is a book that I think anyone with sons should read. It’s Every Man’s Battle. It discusses the sexual society in which we live and how it affects men.

I’m sure there are more books that mirror the 5 Conversations, but this is what I’ve read so far. I know Dobson has a book on raising boys. It’s on my bookshelf to read, but I haven’t made it there and I would hesitate to recommend a book I haven’t read. There’s also an Every Man’s Battle for teens. Check out christianbooks.com and just do a search for boys and parenting.

When I read Raising Boys I’ll be sure to do a review of it!

I too find those very disturbing.
You know what Ellie wants to be for Halloween? Laura Ingalls. We’ve been reading the Little House books together. I’m more than happy to make her costume, because you can be sure I’ll never find a Laura Ingalls costume at the store. Here’s the pattern: http://sewing.patternreview.com/cgi-bin/patterns/sewingpatterns.pl?patternid=16632
Of course, she’s only 6. But there are plenty of disturbing “fairy” costumes for 6 year olds out there.

I cannot wait to see the pictures! That is going to be so cool. Those books are my favorite — Farmer Boy ties with These Happy Golden Years as my all time favorites. I love it that you’re making her costume, too. What an awesome mommy. :)

yup, every year I get ill looking at those costumes…one year I actually went to a costume store to purchase a costume since I was late in making one…half of the store was devoted to THOSE costumes…yak…ugh…I ended up going to a thrift store and overnighting a marcelle wave wig…some pale makeup and red lipstick and a LONG gown and at least I was glamorous as a 30s movie star…haha!

Hallee… I applaud you! Over and over and over again!!!! I LOVE that you are standing up for what you believe to be right for you and your family!!! This is our goal as a family as well. There is a time and a place for Halloween costumes such as the ones you have shown us. I have been to a number of adult only Halloween parties, where the theme was pirates and such. Yes, I’ve dressed as a wench… but the worst part of my costume was that I was showing some cleavage… the rest of me was covered… and unfortunately, these days, with some of the regular clothing out there, my cleavage shows just as much with a v-neck shirt. I also hate many of the clothes out there that are supposed to be for children, specificaly girls. I will be very carefully choosing what my little girl wears as she gets older. Too many of the clothing items out there are made to make our little ones look like rock stars or ‘bunnies’ as you have stated. Okay… my little rant is over now. I applaud you once again!!!!

Hallee, thanks for posting this. I was appalled by the catalog too–I wouldn’t even let my hubby look at it, it was so inappropriate! I am glad you are monitoring Kaylee so closely, and in such a Godly way. Who knows what else will be out there by the time my Kate is a teenager, yikes!

    Loving your blog!
